Just so that you all have an outline of Hume's inventory of mind in preparation for Thursday's topics concerning the passions, I am reproducing here one of the slides from the end of Tuesday's class.
* Everything in mind is a perception
* Every perception is an impression or idea
(cf. EHU §2, p. 64; recall copy principle: every idea copies impressions)
* Every impression is either original or secondary:
** original (sensations), of two types
--- raw sense impressions
--- raw feelings of pleasure and pain
** secondary (reflections), of at least one type
--- passions and emotions
* We use original impressions to produce two things, ideas and passions
** copied, combined, conjoined, etc. into ideas
** or used to produce passions, in two different ways:
-- Directly as caused by pleasure and pain
-- Indirectly in conjunction with other qualities
